Neurologist and Sleep Physician

Dr Matar is a consultant neurologist and sleep physician based at the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. He is also a scientist clinician at the University of Sydney and a recognised authority on the prediction, early diagnosis and treatment of neurodegenerative disorders.

Dr Matar received his medical degree from the University of Sydney before completing his post-graduate training across Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Westmead Hospital, Concord Hospital and the Woolcock. He has undertaken clinical visitorships and fellowships in cognitive neurology and movement disorders through the Mayo Clinic (US), the University of Cambridge (UK) and the National Hospital of Neurology and Neurosurgery (Queen Square, London). As one of very few neurologists in Australia with dual accreditation in sleep medicine, Dr Matar is uniquely experienced in the management of patients suffering from neurological sleep disorders.

Dr Matar is happy to see patients across the entire spectrum of neurological and sleep conditions, including but not limited to: Parkinson’s disease and related conditions; REM sleep behaviour disorder and other abnormal night behaviours; atypical parkinsonian conditions; movement disorders; cognitive concerns; excessive sleep disorders; circadian rhythm disturbances; restless legs and other sleep-related movement disorders; sleep disorders secondary to neurological conditions.

He is also able to provide a botulinum toxin injection service for the treatment of the following conditions: cervical and oromandibular dystonia; hemifacial spasm; blepharospasm; chronic migraine; hyperhidrosis; tremor; bruxism.
