REM Behaviour Disorder Research

REM Behaviour Disorder

WHAT IS REM BEHAVIOUR DISORDER?

Each night, we spend 15-20% of our sleep time in rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. REM sleep is also known as “dreaming sleep” because during this period we have many of our vivid and story-like dreams.

Normally in REM sleep, our voluntary muscles become paralysed so that we don’t act out our dreams. In some individuals, this paralysis does not occur and as a consequence they act out their dreams. This abnormal behaviour during sleep includes diving off the bed or kicking and punching their bed partner. This can be a frightening and disturbing experience which can result in injury. This condition is called REM Behaviour Disorder (RBD).
