Protect yourself: A winter checklist

Protect yourself: A winter checklist

Tuesday, July 22, 2025

This year there has been a steep increase in rates of severe respiratory infection across Australia. The most recent Australian Respiratory Surveillance detailed a sudden 50 per cent increase in hospital admissions for influenza at the end of June and rates of vaccination remain below 30 per cent. Intensive care unit admissions are on the rise and a higher proportion of respiratory patients are requiring ventilation.

More recent data from NSW Health at the end of July reports continued increasing pressure on our hospital system from cases of influenza, while the number of people contracting COVID remains “moderate” and the incidence of RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) appear to have peaked.

To put that in perspective, in NSW alone in the year to June 30 there were 55,057 reported cases of COVID, 72,592 of influenza and 50,171 of RSV.

So, here’s some simple tips to avoid respiratory infections this winter:

  • Keep up to date with vaccinations, it’s not too late to get your flu shot
  • Wear a mask in crowded indoor spaces
  • Stay home when sick and ask others to do the same
  • Wash your hands often and well
  • Use alcohol-based hand sanitiser when out and about
  • Ventilate your home and consider an air purifier with a HEPA filter if you’re in a high-risk household
  • Eat well with a focus on protein, vegetables, and vitamin C-rich foods and stay hydrated
  • Get enough sleep – fatigue can lower immunity
  • Avoid crowds where possible, especially if you’re high risk

Winter’s not over yet. It’s well worth being proactive about your respiratory health to protect yourself and those who are more vulnerable. A little care goes a long way.
