On the move: Our journey 2022 to 2023

Thursday, July 18, 2024

Our latest Biennial Report tracks our progress from 2022 to 2023 through a time of major transformation as we began a new primary affiliation with Macquarie University and prepared to move to a state-of-the-art new facility. How did we do?

After many years primarily affiliated with the University of Sydney, our premises were sold by the University. We were fortunate to establish a new primary affiliation with Macquarie University, and as part of that affiliation a detailed refurbishment of a building on the Macquarie University campus was undertaken.

The refurbishment and upgrade project will facilitate closer ties between the Woolcock and MQ Health, Macquarie University’s integrated medical research, teaching and clinical hub, providing joint opportunities for multidisciplinary research from basic discovery through to innovations in clinical practice, leading to better outcomes for patients.

Despite the upheaval of packing up a building after 15 years’ occupation and transferring to a new location, our Biennial Report documents our continued achievements and impact, including:

  • Seven of our current Research Leaders have been listed in the world’s top two per cent, according to leading scientific publisher Elsevier’s recent ranking of the world’s most cited researchers.
  • The Centre for Chronic Diseases of Ageing has now commenced its first clinical trial with philanthropic funding from the Ernest Heine Foundation and a private donor. The trial is investigating the early markers of cognitive impairment and dementia risk in people with chronic diseases of ageing.
  • The Lung Cancer Network held a very successful symposium that included researchers working on all aspects of lung cancer. The exciting news is that lung cancer screening will be available in future with the potential to reduce the mortality rate for all Australians.
  • Our sleep and respiratory clinic continued to provide this essential service to the community during 2022 and 2023. We are proud of the team who not only support our valued patients but also our groundbreaking research and research translation.
