Searching for the sleep switch

Sleep is essential for our health and wellbeing, yet for many people with insomnia, a good night’s rest can feel out of reach. Researchers are investigating a small but powerful area deep within the brain called the locus coeruleus — a region that plays an important role in regulating alertness, stress responses, and the transition between being awake and asleep.

The locus coeruleus produces a chemical messenger called noradrenaline, which helps the brain stay alert and responsive during the day. Research suggests that changes in activity in this area may contribute to difficulties switching off at night, staying asleep, or experiencing restful sleep.

The LOCUSleep Study, conducted at the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research, aims to better understand how the locus coeruleus influences sleep in people with insomnia. This research may help improve our understanding of insomnia and support the development of new treatments in the future.

Participants will take part in two overnight sleep studies at the Woolcock, approximately two weeks apart. Before sleep, participants will take either a study medication or a placebo. Sleep will be monitored using comfortable, non-invasive equipment, and participants will complete a brief set of questionnaires.
