Early Career Researchers

Dr Yik Lung (Jeremy) Chan graduated with a PhD from the University of Technology Sydney in 2017. His thesis investigated the effects of maternal cigarette smoke exposure on brain health in offspring and was followed by a fellowship from iCare Dust Diseases Board to investigate mechanisms of silicosis. Prior to graduation, he received a Royal Society of New South Wales scholarship in 2016 as one of the State’s top three young scientists. He joined the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research in 2017 under the mentorship of Professor Brian Oliver. In 2018, he received the prestigious NH&MRC Peter Doherty Fellowship to investigate the effect of maternal exposure on traffic-related air pollution on COPD and asthma development in offspring. 

Jeremy has interests in how maternal exposure can cause lifelong changes including disease development in offspring. He focuses mainly on inflammation, oxidative stress and mitochondrial health. He specialises in maternal exposure models, lung function measurements and behavioural studies, mitochondrial function measurement and histology. He is part of the Woolcock’s Next Generation Committee and Chair of the Ernst Animal Facility Users Group at the University of Technology, Sydney.
